Assumptions used
- Volume = area x depth. Weight = cubic yards x a published density. Bags = that weight / the net weight of one bag, rounded up.
- Density 2,400 lb per cubic yard - Caterpillar's dry sand row, loose, as delivered column, opened 2026-09-19. Bags come off the dry row of the same column, 2,400 lb: water is weight, not volume.
- That table has a loose column and a bank column and no compacted column. Bank is a labelled stand-in, never a compaction factor.
- Depth preset: the one-inch screeded bedding layer from the Oregon State University Extension paver guide. Editable, and the base under it is sheet C-101.
- No overage, no compaction allowance and no waste are added: the sheet orders what it calculated.
- No grade of sand is named. Concrete, mason, fill and washed sand move from yard to yard; ask your supplier which one your job takes.
Bags, because that is what the search actually asks
Four of the eight People Also Ask readings collected for this page ask the same thing four ways: how much ground a 50 pound bag covers, how many bags make a cubic yard, how many fill a sandbox, how many a 12 by 12 patio takes. None of the six calculators ranking for sand calculator answers in bags: they answer in cubic yards, tons or kilograms and leave the last division to you.
It is one division. A cubic yard of dry loose sand weighs 2,400 pounds, so it holds 48 bags of 50 pounds, and one bag spreads 0.563 cubic feet — 6.75 square feet at one inch. The bag field is editable for a reason: 50 pounds is the size the search asks about, not a figure anybody published. Read the net weight off the bag you are holding.

Whatever a yard costs delivered, divide it by 48 and you have the price a bag must beat. No price ships on this sheet — type the two you were quoted and the takeoff prices both.
Dry, damp or wet: water is weight, not volume
The one thing this sheet insists on. Bags are always counted from the DRY row. Water adds weight to a pile of sand, not volume to the hole you are filling, so a damp or wet delivery scales heavier while the number of bags it takes to fill the same space is unchanged. Check the net weight printed on your bag.
Caterpillar publishes three sand rows in its earthwork volumes reference table, and they are

Our 144 square foot bed is 0.53 short tons dry, 0.63 damp and 0.69 wet — the same 0.444 cubic yards every time. Buying by weight, moisture is the difference between two tickets. Buying by volume, or counting bags, it changes nothing, which is why the bag line stays on the dry row whichever button you press.
None of the six ranking pages says where its density comes from; one offers a dry and a wet preset with no definition of either. The figure behind every number here is one table, named, linked and quoted — and you can overwrite it with your yard's own, in pounds per cubic yard or kilograms per cubic metre.
Loose, bank, and the compacted column nobody publishes
The table has a loose column, a bank column and no compacted column. Loose is what the truck dumps; bank is the undisturbed deposit, offered here as a STAND-IN for sand walked in or plate-compacted and labelled as one. It is not a compaction factor: nobody published one for sand.
Switching the patio to the bank column takes it from 0.53 to 0.6 short tons and from 22 bags to 24. Use it for what a hole holds once the sand is walked in; ignore it on a delivery ticket, because a truck dumps loose sand and weighs loose sand. No waste, compaction or settlement percentage ships as a default. One of the six ranking pages adds 15 percent and another recommends 5 to 10; neither says where it comes from. The overage field starts at zero and is yours.
Paver bedding: one screeded inch, and what sits around it
The sheet opens in bedding mode, at 1 inch: the 12 by 12 patio is the
search’s own example. The figure is the Oregon State University Extension Service's, which describes
screeding over pipe: Next spread a layer of sand between one and one and a half inches thick. Now, use a 2 x 4 to screed across the sand so the PVC piping is visible. Carefully remove the PVC pipe. This process ensures a uniform layer of sand one inch thick.

Two caveats. It is a homeowner how-to from an extension service, not a paving institute's technical specification, so follow whatever your paver manufacturer prints; and it is a screeded thickness, measured before the pavers are compacted into it. The field stays editable and the sheet cautions rather than blocks. It never names a grade of sand either: concrete, mason, fill and washed sand are sold under names that change from yard to yard, and the guide we opened says to ask — “Your material supplier can provide advice on the appropriate type of sand.”
The base course under the bedding layer is not in this takeoff, and the drawing says so: sheet C-101 does compacted aggregate base.

Worked example: three areas, levelled two inches deep
Bedding is not the only reason to buy sand. Here is the sheet in fill mode over three shapes at once — something exactly one of the six ranking calculators does, and that one applies a single flat conversion to every material it lists.

Limits of this sheet
C-103 turns flat plan areas and a depth into a volume, a weight, a bag count and, if you enter a payload, a number of loads. It does not design a paver section, size a base course, estimate joint or polymeric sand, or account for a sloped surface. The three densities are published figures for sand in general from one engineering table — read it here — not a measurement of the pile in your yard. Quantities are for planning and ordering, not engineering.
